It also operates the key payment systems of the nation and works to support its economic growth. Until the Monetary Policy Committee was formed in 2016, RBI also had full control of monetary policy. It began operations on 1 April 1935 in compliance with the Indian Reserve Bank Act, 1934. The initial share capital was divided into 100 shares each fully paid out. Following the independence of India on 15 August 1947, the RBI was nationalized on 1 January 1949. Almost every bank falls under the control of the Reserve Bank of India. Indian banks are divided into two groups: Scheduled banks and Non Scheduled banks. Scheduled banks are those banks that are included in the second schedule of the RBI Act, 1934.
